Immersed and virtually embedded π1-injective surfaces in graph manifolds

چکیده

We show that many 3-manifold groups have no nonabelian surface subgroups. For example, any link of an isolated complex surface singularity has this property. In fact, we determine the exact class of closed graph-manifolds which have no immersed 1 -injective surface of negative Euler characteristic. We also determine the class of closed graph manifolds which have no nite cover containing an embedded such surface. This is a larger class. Thus, manifolds M exist which have immersed 1 -injective surfaces of negative Euler characteristic, but no such surface is virtually embedded ( nitely covered by an embedded surface in some nite cover of M ). Virtually Embedded Boundary Slopes

We show that for certain hyperbolic manifolds all boundary slopes are slopes of π1-injective immersed surfaces, covered by incompressible embeddings in some finite cover. The manifolds include hyperbolic punctured torus bundles and hyperbolic two-bridge knots.

Separability of embedded surfaces in 3-manifolds

We prove that if S is a properly embedded π1-injective surface in a compact 3-manifold M , then π1S is separable in π1M .

This paper presents some finiteness results for the number of boundary slopes of immersed proper π1-injective surfaces of given genus g in a compact 3-manifold with torus boundary. In the case of hyperbolic 3manifolds we obtain uniform quadratic bounds in g, independent of the 3-manifold.

Incompressible Maps of Surfaces: Boundary Slopes and Dehn Filling

The best understood 3-manifolds are Haken 3-manifolds; these are manifolds that are irreducible and contain incompressible surfaces. One approach to 3-manifolds is to try to generalize the notion of an incompressible surface. Essential laminations and mapped-in π1-injective surfaces have both been used with some success as substitutes for incompressible surfaces, yielding theorems which apply t...

Finite covering spaces of 3-manifolds

Following Perelman’s solution to the Geometrisation Conjecture, a ‘generic’ closed 3-manifold is known to admit a hyperbolic structure. However, our understanding of closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds is far from complete. In particular, the notorious Virtually Haken Conjecture remains unresolved. This proposes that every closed hyperbolic 3-manifold has a finite cover that contains a closed embedde...
